SIX SIGMA lift off

Sean Heywood is currently reviewing the application of six sigma to the construction sector and implementation in design consultancy as part of his studies in construction management. Efforts to date have yielded promising output. Exciting developments. 


Alex Nikolic continues supporting the civil engineering undergraduate and MSc course at UCL.  Alex is a teaching fellow at UCL, providing support to undergraduate and masters students on geotechnical and substructure design topics of interest.  Alex is also assisting the Inter-disciplinary Design Project programme.


As part of A-squared's commitment to supporting academia, Tony Suckling lectures at Southampton and City Universtities on the topic of risk management of deep foundations. 


A-squared commitment to academia continues in 2018  

Angelo Fasano has confirmed two international student placements for 2018.  "We trust the placements, which vary from 3 to 6 months in duration, will enrich the students' ongoing research experience, provide valuable industry exposure and assist with the development of communication skills." says Angelo Fasano.


Parametric review of thrust-block efficiency under way in order to explore efficient means of reaction provision for temporary works support.  The 3D numerical analyses will provide further insight into geometrical efficiencies and minimising material use and cost of temporary support solutions.


Spearheading industry best practice

Tony Suckling's recent efforts chairing the BS8004 review committee, assistance with the development of Ciria 760 and authoring of the updated ICE SPERW third edition continue with recent temporary works guidance development.  Tony, Guido and Andre have been working closely with selected specialist contractors in developing modular temporary works systems for earth retention and propping of excavations.  


Drone technology for geo-hazard assessment and monitoring 

Angelo Fasano has been collaborating with the University of Naples in relation to developing innovative applications of drone technology in the ground engineering discipline.  At present, the team are exploring the implementation of combined visual and radar based techniques for evaluation of ground movements and earth structure risk mitigation.   


 

A-squared have given a series of Tall Buildings CPD presentations throughout the year.  The topic of the sessions covered key substructure drivers, common analytical pitfalls and the adavantges of integrated geotechnical and structural substructure design.  Please get it touch with Angelo Fasano if these sessions are of interest to your practice.
